Eleftherios Charalampous¶
father of Konstantinos Charalampous · CyprusI am Eleftherios Charalampous, father of Konstantinos Charalampous, a dedicated young mathematician and current third-year undergraduate at the University of Chicago. As a parent from a modest background with limited resources, I was deeply concerned about providing my gifted son with the opportunities he deserved to nurture his exceptional talent in mathematics. It was during this challenging time that we connected with Yaashaa Golovanov in the first quarter of 2020, the esteemed director and mentor at the AMMOC, who became an invaluable guide in Konstantinos’s academic journey.
For two transformative years, from ages 17 to 19, Yaashaa (being the single instructor since the beginning) taught Konstantinos intensively, preparing him for the rigors of international mathematical competitions, including the prestigious International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Under Yaashaa’s (equivalently AMMOC, as he is the only one who runs this program in its entirety) expert mentorship and teaching, Konstantinos not only earned an Honorable Mention award in the IMO 2022 but also achieved a perfect mark on one of the most challenging combinatorics problems—a testament to the depth of understanding and problem-solving prowess that Yaashaa/AMMOC instilled in him. AMMOC’s approach went far beyond rote learning; Yaashaa taught mathematics in its purest form, emphasizing rigorous reasoning, logical deduction, and creative insight. This method profoundly increased Konstantinos’s awareness of the beauty and interconnectedness of mathematical concepts, fostering a lifelong passion for the discipline.
Yaashaa’s influence extended well beyond competition preparation. He motivated Konstantinos to pursue a degree in mathematics at a world-renowned institution, recognizing his potential and guiding him through the complex application process. Coming from a modest family with very limited resources, we faced significant financial barriers, but Yaashaa’s unwavering support was instrumental in securing a full scholarship for Konstantinos at the University of Chicago. This scholarship not only alleviated our economic burdens but also granted Konstantinos the distinguished title of university scholar, affirming his place among the institution’s most promising students.
As a father, I was often stressed about ensuring Konstantinos received the education and resources commensurate with his abilities. Yaashaa alleviated these worries by treating Konstantinos not just as a student but as a protégé worthy of his full investment. He provided personalized guidance, including recommendations, essay reviews, and connections within the mathematical community, all while embodying the philosophy of AMMOC: cultivating young minds through an international math circle inspired by legends like Vladimir Arnold and Jerrold Eldon Marsden.
Today, as Konstantinos moves towards his goal to obtain a PhD, he maintains an outstanding academic record at the University of Chicago. He is also part of the REU program (for the summer cohort of 2026) at the University of Chicago. His success is a direct reflection of the foundational skills and inspiration AMMOC provided during those crucial formative years. Yaashaa/AMMOC didn’t just prepare Konstantinos for competitions or university admissions; he shaped him into a thoughtful, resilient mathematician ready to contribute to the field.
We are eternally grateful to Yaashaa and his internationally elite program AMMOC for turning what could have been a story of untapped potential into one of remarkable achievement. For any parents seeking similar guidance for their talented children, I wholeheartedly recommend reaching out to AMMOC—the dedication of AMMOC and its single-instructor model to cultivate young mathematicians is just unparalleled.
